'Payment failed' is a catch-all. In practice it resolves to one of four causes: your bank declined the charge, your card's region is unsupported, your card refused to be stored for recurring billing, or the charge succeeded and the renewal later failed. Which one you have determines whether any fix exists.
Try these first — they are free
- Check your bank app or SMS for a decline notification — that tells you if the bank saw the charge at all.
- If the bank never saw it, it is a region or card-storage issue, not a funds issue.
- If the bank declined it, enable international recurring payments and retry once.
If one of those works, stop here and pay Anthropic directly. It is cheaper than buying through us and we would rather tell you that than sell you something you do not need.
Why those usually don't work
Two of the four causes cannot be fixed from your side at all. If your bank saw nothing, retrying is pointless, and if your bank's policy declined it, retrying reproduces the decline.
The route that does work: an official gift code
